Germany has launched a competition for the supply of electronic-warfare based systems that can detect class one UASs.

An announcement on the EU’s Tenders Electronic Daily on 13 April says that the country is specifically seeking solutions to detect drones weighing less than 25kg.

The announcement comes as drones reshape modern warfare. According to the military think tank Royal United Services Institute, drones now account for approximately 70-80% of all combat casualties in Ukraine.

Countering drones requires a holistic approach, with electronic-warfare based detectors a key approach for tackling this threat. These systems are capable of detecting not only the drone, but also, typically, its operator. Regarding this competition in particular, Germany’s defence procurement agency is specifically looking for a radio signal detector, transport and storage container, and spare parts package.

Following a negotiated competition procedure, the successful company will supply a fixed order of 75 devices. A framework agreement will outline the potential further provision of up to 328 systems.

Each device supplied should include a radio signal detector, transport and storage container, and spare parts package.

Germany notes that the agreement can be renewed a maximum of five times.

No value is attributed to the competition in the announcement. The deadline to enter the competition is 19 May.
