UK shares jamming technology IP with Ukraine

The UK has shared the intellectual property of its ‘Stone Cloak’ jamming technology with Ukraine, to hinder Russia's ability to detect and target Ukraine's drones.

As a result, Ukraine will be able to “mass produce” the Stone Cloak systems, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on 27 July. 

The announcement coincided with a meeting in Portsmouth, UK between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the UK’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, who reiterated the UK’s support for Ukraine. 

According to the MoD, “thousands of these electronic jammers have already been gifted” to Ukraine. DSEI Gateway understands that Ukraine has been using Stone Cloak operationally since 2025 and has seen a marked increase in drones hitting their targets. 

What is Stone Cloak? 

According to the MoD, the Stone Cloak system is approximately the size of a tablet computer. 

The system was designed and produced by scientists and engineers within the MoD itself, with the help of industry, DSEI Gateway understands.  

However, the MoD was unable to respond to DSEI Gateway’s request for comment on which companies supported this effort for security reasons. 

Notably, DSEI Gateway has learnt that battlefield feedback – provided by Ukraine – is informing the MoD’s approach on how Stone Cloak is deployed and enabling refinements to future iterations. 

Going forwards, the MoD plans to feed insights from Stone Cloak into the design of other domestically produced platforms, such as its Brakestop cruise missile, which is currently in the trial phase of development.
